Tipping While Traveling

From how to eat or what to tip, customs vary dependent on the country and it can oftentimes be daunting to know which rules to follow where. So today we delve into gratuities, and what is customary across the globe.

EurosEurope:
Throughout most of Europe tipping isn’t even expected in many cases. Always check to make sure gratuity isn’t automatically added to the bill, but in cases where you feel gratuity should be given, offer 5-8% (at the very most). When at the airport, hotels, etc. it’s customary to give one-two euros per bag and round up other bills to the nearest euro.

Mexico & South America:
Always check the bill first to see if gratuities were added, but if not, always plan on tipping 10-15%.

Canada:
Just like the U.S., plan on tipping 15-20% for all services.

Asia:
Tipping is not only NOT a custom in Japan, Singapore and Korea but depending on the area can also be thought of as rude. In many places you may be paying higher prices as a tourist so check the bill to see if any gratuities were already added. If service staff were particularly kind and you really feel the need to tip, do it very discreetly upon departure.

South Asia & Middle East:
Not only is tipping expected in places like India and Egypt but it’s the best way to ensure good service. While you don’t have to add on as much as you would in the U.S., giving 5-10% or rounding up is the best way to go. When in Dubai, check the tab for the service tax before adding on gratuity.
