What NOT to Pack

Over-packing is a problem. And one that most of us are guilty of…who knows if you’ll need that dress, or those sneakers or that umbrella. Although, is it really better to play it safe and bring the kitchen sink, rather than save space and buy something upon arrival to your destination?

The following are items we recommend NOT to pack when readying for your next getaway:

Gym Gear:
You’re on vacation for a reason; put the gym gear away. BUT, if you just HAVE to get that workout in, try yoga, pilates or go jog on the beach – none of which require gym shoes, which take up much-needed space in your luggage. And don’t bring your yoga mat. Oftentimes resorts offer those for guests to use at little or no cost.

Toiletries:
Yes, you need to bring your toothbrush and deoderant. But do you need to bring shampoo, conditioner, sunscreen, bug spray or lotion when it’s already being provided for you – or when you can purchase your favorite brands when you get to your destination? No. Save some space and lighten the load by not packing these items.

Towels:
One thing hotels and resorts are not short on: towels. You can take them from your room to the pool, or on some adventurous excursion; they really don’t mind as long as you bring it back. Staying at a BnB and prefer the comfort of your own plush towel? Buy a few and ship them before your trip so you don’t have to weigh down your luggage.

Jewelry & Valuables:
Break out the costume jewelry and leave the finer things at home. Unfortunately luggage goes missing and tourists are common targets amongst sight-seeing locales so safe yourself the heartbreak. If you can’t part with it, make sure it’s at least insured, or stowed away in the hotel safe when not being worn.

Another tip: stick with just silver or just gold for even less stress.

Travel-Guide-BooksGuidebooks:
While very informative, guidebooks take up space (and weight) in your bag. Not to mention everything in that book can also be found online via your phone, iPad or other device. So read up before you go, maybe write down a few must-sees in your phone, and look up the rest once you get there.
